There will always be disputes between leaders, kindreds, halls and individual practioners, historians and scholars.
I've looked up and asked here are some of the top answers. I've also seen it first hand.
Reasons for clashing:
* Public and Private Conflict: Many Kindreds tend to keep their business their business including their membership and rituals.
While some kindreds are more vocal about their business. Ultimately leading to conflict, gossip and misunderstanding.
* Members: the ultimate numbers game, the fighting over people and not letting potential members feel out other kindreds before making a decision to become a member. Also the criteria of membership kindreds have different rules and oaths and could exclude people from membership or pressure them into a oath they should of never took.
* Worldviews, Politics and Values: Some kindreds or memebers may hold views on social and political issues that differ from others, leading to misunderstanding, and conflict.
* Interpretation of what kind of Norse Pagan you are.
1. Identity Concept some kindreds may have strict interpretations of what it means to be a "Heathen". Certain clothing, hand gestures, rules and regulations. Which can lead to disputes with kindreds that are more liberal and have more inclusive views.
2. Disputes between paths Asatru, Reconstructionist and Universalist and all the other paths under the Norse Pagan Umbrella.
3. Differing interpretations of the Eddas, Havamal and History, disagreements about appropriate ritual practices, and even conflicts over political agendas or ideologies. This can also start internal kindred conflict.
4. Frequency of Blots, Sumbels and rituals. And prioritizing it over another.
* Internal conflict of a kindred: disputes about who should be the leader and how ever many positions you put in your kindred. Decisions made by leadership that does not with hold the integrity of kindred members. All of the above too!
* Internal conflict of a kindred: disputes about who should be the leader and how ever many positions you put in your kindred. Decisions made by leadership that does not with hold the integrity of kindred members. All of the above too!
* How you do your ritual can be controversial, who knew!
* Kindred splits and having conflicts within multiple kindreds leadership. Flip Flopping sides and creating uncertainty of your Kindred members let alone your friendships.
* Deity Worship: some only call upon a certain god, some call upon more, some worship controversial gods aka Loki. Some allow other gods to be worshipped (universalist) I say to this just be eclectic.
* Do you have the qualifications to have your position?
Havamal 32
Many men
are kind,
but can be driven to fight.
There will always
be conflict between men:
where there's more then one, there's a fight.
Jackon Crawford translation
Havmal 32
Gumnar margir erusk gagnhollir,
en at virði vrekask;
aldar róg þat mun æ vera,
órir gestr við gest.
Conflict, drama, gossip and misunderstanding can destroy a community or it can build it. It's up to you how the story will end.
